Both medications are similar in how they work, as they mimic natural hormones to control appetite and slow digestion. Tirzepatide, however, activates two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), while semaglutide activates only one (GLP-1). Tirzepatide may offer slightly more appetite control and less GI side effects.
Stopping semaglutide or tirzepatide may lead to some weight regain over time, especially if lifestyle habits are not maintained. Both medications help control appetite and improve metabolic health, so without them, it can become more challenging to manage hunger and calorie intake. Research indicates that while weight regain varies among individuals, sustaining healthy diet and exercise routines can help mitigate regain and maintain some of the weight loss achieved during treatment.
Studies show that participants in clinical trials for semaglutide and tirzepatide experienced weight regain after stopping the medication. For example, in the STEP 4 trial, participants regained some weight within a year after stopping semaglutide. This emphasizes the importance of lifestyle support and ongoing weight management strategies for maintaining results after discontinuing medication.

Weight loss with these medications focuses on reducing body fat. However, to help prevent muscle loss, we recommend regular exercise, especially strength training, and adequate protein intake.
No. Semaglutide and tirzepatide are sourced from a reputable, licensed compounding pharmacy. While these compounded medications are not covered by insurance, obtaining them through a compounding pharmacy offers a more affordable alternative to commercially available versions. For instance, the list price for Ozempic (semaglutide) is approximately $936 per month, and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is around $1,069 per month.
No strict diet is required, but adopting a balanced, nutrient-rich diet will help maximize your results. These medications work best when combined with healthy eating habits, so avoiding high-calorie, low-nutrient foods is recommended.

Obesity isn’t just about a number on the scale— it’s a complex health challenge that can increase the risk of conditions like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and even some cancers, such as breast and colon cancer (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). These conditions often lead to lifelong medical needs, regular doctor visits, and substantial medication costs. On average, a person with at least one chronic condition incurs approximately $6,032 in healthcare costs each year, compared to $1,105 for those without any chronic conditions (American Action Forum, 2020). Over a lifetime, this can mean tens of thousands spent on medications, treatments, and medical appointments, often pulling people away from their families and reducing their quality of life.
Beyond personal finances, the impact of obesity extends to the national economy. In the United States alone, obesity-related medical costs reach an estimated $147 billion annually (Cawley & Meyerhoefer, 2012). This burden affects public healthcare systems, insurance premiums, and ultimately, every taxpayer.
Losing weight can feel like an uphill battle, especially once obesity sets in, and there are real biological reasons why it’s so challenging. When the body stores excess fat, it actually begins to change its internal chemistry and metabolism. In obesity, your body can become resistant to hormones that signal fullness, making it harder to feel satisfied after eating. Another key factor is the chronic inflammatory state that occurs in the body with obesity. This inflammation can lead to insulin resistance, making it harder for your body to manage blood sugar effectively and increasing cravings for high-calorie, sugary foods.
This inflammatory response can also slow down your metabolism, making it even harder to burn calories efficiently. To make matters more complicated, when you start losing weight, your body may perceive this as a threat to its stored energy and respond by increasing inflammation further, slowing metabolism, and ramping up hunger signals. This is a protective mechanism rooted in our survival instincts, but it can make weight loss feel exhausting and discouraging. Add to this the emotional and social factors—like stress, mental fatigue, and the stigma often faced by those with obesity—and it becomes clear why losing weight isn’t just about willpower. It’s a complex, multifaceted process that requires patience, support, and often a shift in mindset towards long-term, sustainable changes rather than quick fixes.
Understanding that there are real biological factors at play—like chronic inflammation, hormone disruptions, and a slower metabolism—can help you have grace for yourself in your weight loss journey. It’s not a simple matter of willpower, especially when we live in a culture filled with processed foods and limited public education around nutrition, making it so easy to fall into patterns that are hard to break. It’s okay to acknowledge these challenges and seek support, including weight loss medications, as a helpful tool rather than a quick fix. These medications can act as a bridge, giving your body a chance to reset and adapt while you make gradual, sustainable changes towards healthier habits. Remember, using every resource available to help you feel your best is a form of self-care, and it’s a positive step towards reclaiming your health and well-being.
